Comments about the CAFIB ANALYSIS OF
PHENOTYPE AND TEMPERAMENT
(CHARACTER AND NERVOUS SYSTEM).

By  Fernando Zanetti – er, judge, director and former Cafib President

What determines a are its phenotype and genotype traits.

This is a premise that many cross-ers forget. Many believe that all individuals who present correct phenotype can immediately be considered authentic Filas. What about their behavior characteristics, which is a product of their environment, carved over centuries and which are also part of their genotype?

To describe a , you need to analyze a representative number of individuals and then transcribe all those found features into what is called a " Standard", a description that then gives direction to parameters for ing. Many clubs which consider the pedigree a document of origin, start then to make adjustments to the standard in order to fit their changes of direction, leading to the loss of the ’s original features. This is a form used by many cross-ers to enter animals resulting from their experiences within their ing.

As a means of suppressing cross-ing and keeping the authentic characteristics of the Fila, described in its [standard’s] original version by the cynophile, er and and all-rounder show judge,  Dr. Paulo Santos Cruz, the CAFIB adopted a ing Regulation that includes the ANALYSIS OF PHENOTYPE, CHARACTER AND NERVOUS SYSTEM mandatory for all dogs – having a certificate of origin (pedigree) or not. The selection process has the following phases:

Phase 1 - Verification of Litter, made by a person accredited by CAFIB

Phase 2 - Analysis of phenotype and temperament for animals under twelve months of age (optional), to analyze the development, type and structure, as well as any eventual correctable defects.

Phase 3 - Analysis of phenotype and temperament for animals twelve months and older, regardless of the results of a previous evaluation, a new analysis of phenotype will be made. Now including temperament and nervous system tests. Approved dogs judged in the exhibition will receive a (Regular, Good, Very Good or Excellent) qualification, in accordance to its proximity to the standard.

Phase 4 - In order to evaluate the genotype of the animals, females are subjected to reproduction with two different  (approved) sires, and males with three different (approved) dams to examine the offspring and start a new cycle.

After completing the last phase successfully, it can be said that the dog is a real Fila Brasileiro. All dogs that have not been approved, no matter if  they are holders of “Certificate of Origin Registration” or not, will have their records revoked and can not be used in reproduction.
